{"id":10074,"date":"2024-01-27T07:17:56","date_gmt":"2024-01-27T15:17:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/streaming2nps.com\/?p=10074"},"modified":"2024-02-09T19:46:29","modified_gmt":"2024-02-10T03:46:29","slug":"florida-panhandle-east","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/streaming2nps.com\/?p=10074","title":{"rendered":"Florida Panhandle-East"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color\" style=\"color:#090d8e\"><strong>Staying in the Big Bend Region of Florida <\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>We picked Perry as a stop, as it was about halfway from Sarasota to Pensacola, and close enough to visit the <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#046969\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Florida State Capitol<\/mark><\/strong> in <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#046969\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Tallahassee<\/mark><\/strong>, and just before arrival, discovered <strong>so much more<\/strong> to visit!  We did it all in only 3 days, driving almost 400 miles:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color\" style=\"color:#090d8e\"><strong>Day 1, Check out the &#8220;Highly Recommended&#8221;<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Edward Ball&nbsp;Wakulla Springs State Park<\/mark><\/strong>, a National Natural Landmark, is home to one of the world\u2019s largest and deepest freshwater springs, with manatees, alligators and lots of birds which we viewed from a riverboat tour and the diving platform.  <em>Creature from the Black Lagoon<\/em>&nbsp;(1954) was filmed there.  Lunch at the Historic Lodge was delicious!  And the hike afterwards was nice.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\">St Mark&#8217;s Wildlife Refuge<\/mark><\/strong>, one of the oldest wildlife refuges in the United States, was established in 1931 as a wintering ground for migratory birds. We stopped at a few viewing sites, took a short walk on a levee, visited <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\">St Mark&#8217;s Lighthouse<\/mark><\/strong>, built in 1831, and noted adjacent <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Big Bend Seagrasses Aquatic Preserve<\/mark><\/strong>, the largest aquatic preserve in Florida, along over 150 miles of coastline.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow aligncenter\" data-autoplay=\"true\" data-delay=\"5\" data-effect=\"slide\"><div class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow_container swiper-container\"><ul class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow_swiper-wrapper <\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Natural Bridge Battlefield Historic State Park<\/mark><\/strong> (a short stop on the way to Tallahassee) is the site of the second largest Civil War battle in Florida and where the St. Marks River drops into a sinkhole and flows underground for one-quarter of a mile before reemerging.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#046969\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Florida State Capitol, Tallahassee<\/mark><\/strong> (#32) is a 22 story high rise, which replaced the historic capitol building in 1977.  No tours offered, and we didn&#8217;t make it to the Museum in the old Capitol.  We found the elevator system the most interesting.  Hmmm.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#090d8e\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Mission San Luis<\/mark><\/strong> is a Living Museum, whose history is one of triumph, tragedy, and revival, extending from the Apalachee pre-contact period to the present, which we visited in Tallahassee after our Capitol Tour. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Shopped at our <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#090d8e\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">40th<\/span><\/mark><\/strong> different <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#090d8e\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Costco<\/mark><\/strong>, in Tallahassee.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow in?<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Forest Capital Museum State Park<\/mark><\/strong>, just a mile from our campground, has a museum which &#8220;celebrates the importance of forestry in Florida, dating back to the early 1800s&#8221;.  In addition, there is an authentic 19th-century cracker homestead, much like those scattered throughout Florida at the turn of the century. We started our 3rd day there, before heading to&#8230;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\">San Marcos de Apalache Historic State Park<\/mark><\/strong>, located where the St. Marks River joins the Wakulla River and flows out into Apalache Bay, since the 1500&#8217;s Spanish, English, American and Confederate forces have occupied the site.
