{"id":10966,"date":"2024-04-01T20:00:56","date_gmt":"2024-04-02T03:00:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/streaming2nps.com\/?p=10966"},"modified":"2024-04-10T07:22:34","modified_gmt":"2024-04-10T14:22:34","slug":"great-smokies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/streaming2nps.com\/?p=10966","title":{"rendered":"Great Smokies"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color\" style=\"color:#090d8e\"><strong>Camping near <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>Great Smoky Mountains National Park<\/strong><\/mark><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>For our first time camping in <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#090d8e\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Tennessee<\/mark><\/strong> <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">(State #38)<\/mark>, we were less than 1\/2 mile from the <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Cades Cove<\/mark> <\/strong>entrance to <strong><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>Great Smoky Mountains National Park<\/strong><\/mark><\/strong><\/strong>, for 8 nights.  We thought &#8220;the shoulder season&#8221; would be a good time to visit America&#8217;s most visited national park.  We can not imagine what the summer must be like.  It was <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#730202\" class=\"has-inline-color\">busy!<\/mark><\/strong>  Slow driving, full parking lots, and overrun with children!  School Break.  A big wind storm downed 1,000 trees in <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Cades Cove<\/mark><\/strong>, and closed it for 3 days&#8230;thank goodness we visited before that happened.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Visits to <mark style=\"font-weight: bold; background-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0); color: rgb(29, 106, 6);\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>2<\/strong><\/mark> new (1 revisit) <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Great Smoky related National Park sites<\/mark><\/strong>:    <\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>Great Smoky Mountains National Park<\/strong><\/mark> (#244), where ridge upon ridge of forest straddles the border between North Carolina and Tennessee.  We went into the park 4 days:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>visited several of the &#8220;most popular&#8221; sites, e.g. <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Cades Cove<\/mark><\/strong> (with the widest variety of historic buildings in the park, including a working grist mill).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>drove over <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Newfound Gap<\/mark><\/strong>&#8230;from the north to south \/ Tennessee to North Carolina \/ across the Appalachian Trail.  We spent time at <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>Oconaluftee Visitor Center<\/strong><\/mark><\/strong> and<strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\"> Mountain Farm Museum<\/mark><\/strong> at the south end of the drive, before returning.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>took several short hikes while touring the 1st 3 days, and one 6+ mile hike to\/past <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Laurel Falls<\/mark><\/strong> early Sunday morning.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>Appalachian National Scenic Trail<\/strong><\/mark> (#86-revisit), which straddles the state line between North Carolina and Tennessee for most of its length through <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>Great Smoky Mountains NP<\/strong><\/mark>.  We briefly walked on the AT in both states, at <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Newfound Gap<\/mark><\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>Blue Ridge Parkway<\/strong><\/mark> (#245) connects <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>Great Smoky Mountains National Park<\/strong><\/mark> on the south, with <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Shenandoah National Park<\/mark> <\/strong>on the north.  Did you know that?  At the <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>Oconaluftee Visitor Center<\/strong><\/mark><\/strong>, we were <strong>SO CLOSE<\/strong> to its Southern Entrance, that we just had to drive a bit on the Parkway&#8230;all the way to the first pullout (&lt;1 mile)!  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow aligncenter\" data-autoplay=\"true\" data-delay=\"5\" data-effect=\"slide\"><div class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow_container swiper-container\"><ul 0); color: rgb(29, 106, 6);\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>2<\/strong><\/mark> other <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\">National Park Sites<\/mark><\/strong>:    <\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>Manhattan Project National Historic Park<\/strong><\/mark> (#36-Revisit), finally visited our 3rd\/last Manhattan Project site, in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.  That is where they did the work to enrich Uranium for the Little Boy bomb, which was ultimately dropped on Hiroshima. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>Andrew Johnson National Historic Site<\/strong><\/mark> (#246), where we learned more about our 17th president, his complex presidency (1865-69), and about the <strong>SO GLAD<\/strong> that we picked the KOA in Townsend rather than the one in Pigeon Forge to visiting the Smokies..  Let&#8217;s just say, we have now dubbed Pigeon Forge the &#8220;<strong>Tacky Jersey Shore<\/strong>&#8221; of Tennessee.  <strong>OMG!<\/strong>  And no, we did not visit Dollywood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We were so busy (finished our taxes, too, on the rainy\/stormy day), that we didn&#8217;t get this post ready to go before we left this morning. Thought we&#8217;d get it out this afternoon, <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#730202\" class=\"has-inline-color\">BUT<\/mark><\/strong>, we made a 3 hour, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">unplanned<\/span> stop at <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#090d8e\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Bush&#8217;s Baked Bean Factory<\/mark><\/strong> in Chestnut Hill, Tennessee. Parkway<\/strong><\/mark> as we can (on our way to <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Shenandoah<\/mark><\/strong>).
