{"id":11034,"date":"2024-04-06T17:39:39","date_gmt":"2024-04-07T00:39:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/streaming2nps.com\/?p=11034"},"modified":"2024-04-10T05:52:55","modified_gmt":"2024-04-10T12:52:55","slug":"southern-blue-ridge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/streaming2nps.com\/?p=11034","title":{"rendered":"Southern Blue Ridge"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color\" style=\"color:#090d8e\"><strong>Camping near Asheville, North Carolina<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>First of 3 stops moving north, adjacent to the <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>Blue Ridge Parkway<\/strong><\/mark><\/strong>, through western North Carolina and Virginia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Revisits to <mark style=\"font-weight: bold; background-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0); color: rgb(29, 106, 6);\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>3<\/strong><\/mark> <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\">National Park sites<\/mark><\/strong> (to see new-to-us sites):<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>Great Smoky Mountains National Park<\/strong><\/mark> (#244), where we returned to drive up <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Clingmans Dome<\/mark><\/strong> (the road to it opened April 1).  At 6,643 feet, it is the highest point in the Great Smokies, the highest point in Tennessee, and the third highest mountain east of the Mississippi.<sup data-fn=\"ee5b9101-9557-4d34-b311-d4da302385c9\" class=\"fn\"><a id=\"ee5b9101-9557-4d34-b311-d4da302385c9-link\" href=\"#ee5b9101-9557-4d34-b311-d4da302385c9\">1<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp; A partly cloudy day, as we drove in, but the top of <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Clingmans Dome<\/mark><\/strong> was swathed in clouds.  We still walked up the steep half-mile to the tower at the top, but didn&#8217;t get much of a view.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>Appalachian National Scenic Trail<\/strong><\/mark> (#86-revisit), which we briefly got onto again, in 2 spots, during our visit to <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Clingmans Dome<\/mark><\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>Blue Ridge Parkway<\/strong><\/mark> (#245), connecting <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Shenandoah National Park<\/mark> <\/strong>(MP 0) to <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>Great Smoky Mountains National Park<\/strong><\/mark> (MP 469.1), is the <strong>Most Visited National Park Unit<\/strong>.  Unfortunately, most of the Visitor Centers &amp; Museums along the way don&#8217;t open until April 14 or 28.  So our explorations of the next week or so will mostly be driving some of it, stopping at pullouts and taking a few short hikes. Over two days from the Asheville area, we drove 73.3 miles (15.6%) on it:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>After visiting  to <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Clingmans Dome<\/mark><\/strong>, we drove from the Southern Entrance at MP 469.1 to MP 443.1.  At <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Waterrock Knob<\/mark><\/strong>, we walked another steep half-mile to the viewpoint.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Second drive began at the <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>Blue Ridge Parkway Visitor Center<\/strong><\/mark> in Asheville at MP 384, before we drove north to <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Craggy Gardens<\/mark><\/strong>, MP 364.5, where the road is closed for tunnel work.  Then we drove south, past <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Mt. Pisgah<\/mark><\/strong>, to MP 411.8, where the road was <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#7896cd\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Closed for Snow!<\/mark><\/strong> (It was ~37<sup>o<\/sup> at the high point of our drive&#8230;and WINDY!  Mostly just enjoyed the views.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow aligncenter\" data-autoplay=\"true\" data-delay=\"5\" data-effect=\"slide\"><div style=\"font-weight: bold; background-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0); color: rgb(29, 106, 6);\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>1<\/strong><\/mark> new <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\">National Park Site<\/mark><\/strong>:<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site<\/strong><\/mark> (#247), where we toured his home and learned why he was the &#8220;Poet of the People&#8221;. We hadn&#8217;t realized that he was a journalist, novelist, historian, poet, biographer, musician, and social activist. Among many honors, he received a Pulitzer in History, for <em>Abraham Lincoln: The Prairie Years &amp; The War Years<\/em> (Six Volume Set) in 1940 and a Pulitzer in Poetry for his <em>Collected Poems<\/em> in 1951. But the only honor he displayed in his home was from the NAACP, for his coverage of the 1919 Chicago race riots and for his &#8220;life-long struggle to extend the frontiers of social justice.&#8221;  We also hiked 4.5 miles on trails on the 270 acres, including up Glassy Mountain.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow aligncenter\" data-autoplay=\"true\" data-delay=\"5\" Who knew they opened a second Brewery, on the east coast, <strong>10 years ago<\/strong>?!?
