First day here it RAINED all day and ended with nearby tornado warnings.  That was a hang out\/laundry day.  Then we spent 2 beautiful days touring and hiking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Day trip visit to <mark style=\"font-weight: bold; background-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0); color: rgb(29, 106, 6);\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>1<\/strong><\/mark> new <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\">National Park Site<\/mark><\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>Booker T. Washington National Monument<\/strong><\/mark> (#248), where <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>Booker T. Washington <\/strong><\/mark>was born a slave in April 1856 on the 207-acre tobacco farm of James Burroughs and was freed 9 years later, at the end of Civil War.  He became the first principal of Tuskegee Normal and Industrial School. His mother was the Farm Cook<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Revisits to <mark style=\"font-weight: bold; background-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0); color: rgb(29, 106, 6);\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>2<\/strong><\/mark> <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\">National Park sites<\/mark><\/strong> (to see new-to-us sites):<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>Blue Ridge Parkway<\/strong><\/mark> (#245), continuing north toward <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Shenandoah National Park<\/mark> <\/strong>(MP 0).  On two days this stop, we drove on 75.8 more miles, for 204.1 total (43.5%):\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>After our visit to <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>Great Booker T. Washington<\/strong><\/mark> and Roanoke, we drove back to camp via the <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>Blue Ridge Parkway<\/strong><\/mark>, from MP 121.4 to MP 61.4.  As it was approaching dusk on our drive, we just stopped briefly at a few viewpoints.  <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#730202\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Beautiful Evening<\/mark><\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Second drive was pretty short, after a 7-mile hiking day, from a tad north in Buena Vista at MP 45.6 to MP 61.4.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>Appalachian National Scenic Trail<\/strong><\/mark> (#86-revisit), which we saw a few times, where it crisscrosses the  <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>Blue Ridge<\/strong><\/mark>, along the ridge in the Jefferson National Forest.  But the <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#730202\" class=\"has-inline-color\">BEST<\/mark><\/strong> was hiking 2+ miles of the<mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong> AT<\/strong><\/mark>, across the James River, along it, and up Matt&#8217;s Creek to the Matt&#8217;s Creek Shelter (and back).  At the shelter we ran into 3 through-hikers, who left Georgia February 28.  They expect to make Katahdin in late July.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow aligncenter\" data-autoplay=\"true\" data-delay=\"5\" data-effect=\"slide\"><div style=\"color:#090d8e\"><strong>Other Adventures<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>In Roanoke, we wandered around Market Square and had dinner at The Hatch, a Southern Comfort restaurant in the City Market Building.  And yesterday, between hiking the <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>AT<\/strong><\/mark> and driving a bit more of the <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>Blue Ridge<\/strong><\/mark>, we visited <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>Natural Bridge State Park<\/strong><\/mark>, where we got in 2.5 more miles of walking along Cedar Creek, where <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>Natural Bridge<\/strong>, <\/mark>200-feet tall, sits in&nbsp;a limestone gorge carved out by Cedar Creek.
