{"id":11480,"date":"2024-07-28T19:51:20","date_gmt":"2024-07-29T02:51:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/streaming2nps.com\/?p=11480"},"modified":"2024-08-24T06:20:09","modified_gmt":"2024-08-24T13:20:09","slug":"along-the-niagara-river","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/streaming2nps.com\/?p=11480","title":{"rendered":"Along the Niagara River"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color\" style=\"color:#090d8e\"><strong>From Lake Erie to Lake Ontario<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>We camped in Youngstown, NY, and over 2 days, visited sites from Buffalo (on Lake Erie) to Niagara Falls to Fort Niagara (on Lake Ontario).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Visit to <mark style=\"font-weight: bold; background-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0); color: rgb(29, 106, 6);\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>1<\/strong><\/mark> new <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\">National Park Site<\/mark><\/strong>: (visited 2 Heritage Areas)<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor<\/strong><\/mark>, whose western end is Buffalo.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural National Historic Site<\/strong><\/mark> (#253), in Buffalo, where we visited the museum and got a tour of the house where he was inaugurated, as a backdrop to the story of his inauguration after McKinley&#8217;s assassination. We also got to be President!  And&#8230;did you know???  With 6 children, President Theodore Roosevelt needed more of the White House for living, so he oversaw the construction of a temporary office building. That temporary office building is known today as the West Wing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow aligncenter\" data-autoplay=\"true\" data-delay=\"5\" Area<\/strong><\/mark>, from <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>Niagara Falls<\/strong><\/mark> to <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>Old Fort Niagara<\/strong><\/mark>.  We visited:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>Niagara Falls State Park<\/strong><\/mark> and even took the <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>Niagara Maid of the Mist<\/strong><\/mark> Tour.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>Niagara Falls Underground Railroad National Heritage Center<\/strong><\/mark>.  It&#8217;s in an old Custom House, adjoined with the local Amtrak Station, across from what was another Roebling Suspension Bridge, now the Whirlpool Rapids Bridge!  This was a popular crossing point to freedom in Canada, the one used by Harriet Tubman.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>Old Fort Niagara<\/strong><\/mark> at <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>Fort Niagara State Park<\/strong><\/mark>, where we lucked out again, visiting on<mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong> Revolutionary War Encampment Weekend<\/strong><\/mark>. Aside from touring the fort, we saw lots of British and Colonial Troops in encampment, and a 250th anniversary reenactment of the arrival of the King&#8217;s Regiment at Fort Niagara.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow aligncenter\" data-autoplay=\"true\" data-delay=\"5\" data-effect=\"slide\"><div class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow_container swiper-container\"><ul class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow_swiper-wrapper swiper-wrapper\"><li class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow_slide There we toured 2 ships and 1 boat&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#090d8e\" class=\"has-inline-color\">USS The Sullivans<\/mark><\/strong>, a Fletcher-class Destroyer, the largest and most important class of U.S. Destroyers used in World War II.  It is the only Navy ship named after more than one person, the 5 Sullivan brothers, from Waterloo, Iowa who died together aboard USS Juneau CL-52 in November 1942. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#090d8e\" class=\"has-inline-color\">USS Little Rock<\/mark><\/strong> CL-92 (CLG-4) is a Guided Missile Cruiser, the only surviving vessel from the Cleveland Class of light cruisers in World War II.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#090d8e\" class=\"has-inline-color\">USS Croaker<\/mark><\/strong> SSK-246 is a decommissioned Gato-class submarine that served in World War II.  We got a lot of info from a Vietnam era veteran docent, who served ~2.5 years on a similar class of submarine.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow aligncenter\" data-autoplay=\"true\" data-delay=\"5\" data-effect=\"slide\"><div class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow_container swiper-container\"><ul class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow_swiper-wrapper And we did <strong>not<\/strong> get a replacement tire for The Beast in Buffalo.  It didn&#8217;t work out.
