Visited 1<\/strong><\/mark> new National Park Site<\/mark><\/strong>:<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Effigy Mounds National Monument<\/strong><\/mark> (#263), where 200 plus American Indian mounds, are located in one of the most picturesque sections of the Upper Mississippi River Valley. The construction of animal shaped (effigy) mounds was a regional cultural phenomenon of the Late Woodland Period (1400-750 B.P.) along the Upper Mississippi River and extending east to Lake Michigan. The Effigy Moundbuilders continued to build conical mounds for burial purposes, but also built linear or long rectangular mounds and the effigy mounds that were used for ceremonial purposes that remain a mystery. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We spent a day in the north unit, at the Visitor Center, on 2 Ranger walks, and hiking 7+ miles to 4 Mississippi River Overlooks. We spent a couple of hours yesterday, hiking in the south unit to see the Marching Bear effigy mounds, which appear on the Iowa National Park quarter!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
