It was a &#8220;fun&#8221; drive through the mountains to get here.  We&#8217;d planned only 2 nights (campground closes today), but discovered we could stay 1 more, so we are. background-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0); color: rgb(29, 106, 6);\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>1<\/strong><\/mark> new <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\">National Park Site<\/mark><\/strong> (encompassing <mark style=\"font-weight: bold; background-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0); color: rgb(29, 106, 6);\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>2 NST<\/strong><\/mark>s):<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>Pea Ridge National Military Park<\/strong><\/mark> (#267), site of the <strong>Battle That Saved Missouri for The Union.<\/strong> On March 7-8, 1862, over 23,000 soldiers fought here to decide the fate of Missouri.  It was a turning point of the war in the Trans-Mississippi. Pea Ridge was the most pivotal Civil War battle west of the Mississippi River.  We drove the 8 mile Battlefield Road, visited all 10 sites along the way (including <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>Elkhorn Tavern<\/strong><\/mark>, the only historic building in the park), and drove to another site, to see the Union entrenchments that were built, but never used.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Butterfield Overland National Historic Trail<\/mark><\/strong>, which follows the routes of the <strong>Butterfield Overland Mail Company<\/strong>, a stagecoach service that operated from 1858 to 1861. The company delivered passengers and mail from Memphis, Tennessee and St. Louis, Missouri to San Francisco, California, passing through Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona.  We were last on the trail just 3 days ago at <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>Wilson&#8217;s Creek National Battlefield<\/strong><\/mark>, where it ran by the Ray House.  At <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>Pea Ridge<\/strong><\/mark> it ran right by the <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>Elkhorn Tavern<\/strong><\/mark>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Trail of Tears National Historic Trail<\/mark><\/strong>, which in this area followed the <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Butterfield Overland NHT<\/mark><\/strong>, getting close to Oklahoma.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow aligncenter\" data-autoplay=\"true\"
