Then we loaded onto a bus for our last <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#090d8e\" class=\"has-inline-color\">John Halls Alaska<\/mark><\/strong> led tour, to visit <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#090d8e\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Sitka<\/mark><\/strong> highlights, about 45-60 minutes each:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>Sitka National Historical Park<\/strong><\/mark> (see below, as we also visited all afternoon)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#090d8e\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Fortress of the Bear<\/mark><\/strong>, an educational rescue center for orphaned bears, where we watched some black bears being fed raw chicken and sister brown bears, Nuka &amp; Nikiska, play in the water<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#090d8e\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Alaska Raptor Center<\/mark><\/strong>, a healing and rehabilitation center for injured avian patients, which highlights the community\u2019s unique relationship with nature. Half were shuttled straight to the Sitka Airport and the remainder (spending the night or on later flights) dispersed to do their own thing.  We checked into our hotel and walked along the waterfront back to&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Finish Visit to <mark style=\"font-weight: bold; background-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0); color: rgb(29, 106, 6);\" class=\"has-inline-color\">1<\/mark> new <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\">National Park Site<\/mark><\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>Sitka National Historical Park<\/strong><\/mark> (#307), on an island amid towering spruce and hemlock, it preserves the site of a battle between invading Russian traders and Indigenous Kiks.\u00e1di Tlingit. Totem poles from Tlingit and Haida areas line the park\u2019s scenic coastal trail, and the restored <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Russian Bishop\u2019s House<\/mark><\/strong> is a rare reminder of Russia\u2019s colonial legacy in North America. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On our morning visit, we got our stamp and took the <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Russian Memorial Loop<\/mark><\/strong> hike.  In the afternoon we explored the <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>Sitka NHP Visitor Center<\/strong><\/mark>, hiked the <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Totem Pole Trail<\/mark><\/strong>, and attended 2 Ranger talks, about the Russian-Tlingit Battle and about the Totem Poles.  Then we walked back downtown to check out the <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Russian Bishop\u2019s House<\/mark><\/strong>, the Museum and a tour of the living quarters &amp; chapel on the 2nd floor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow aligncenter\" data-autoplay=\"true\" data-delay=\"5\" data-effect=\"slide\"
