We just hung out in camp and hiked around <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>Sesquicentennial Lake<\/strong><\/mark> on Halloween, class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Monday morning Tour of <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#046969\" class=\"has-inline-color\">1<\/mark> new <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#046969\" class=\"has-inline-color\">State Capitol<\/mark>:<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#046969\" class=\"has-inline-color\">South Carolina State Capitol in Columbia<\/mark><\/strong> (#45), whose founding was similar to North Carolina, in that Columbia was picked to be the capitol of South Carolina after the War for Independence, to get it away from the coast and make it more central, and it was designed to be the capitol.  It is a beautiful and charming building, which took 56 years to complete.  It was stalled, almost complete, with the advent of the Civil War in 1861.  Partially destroyed by Sherman in 1865, it wasn&#8217;t fully completed until 1907.  You can see 5 places where Sherman&#8217;s cannan balls hit the building.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\">National Park Site<\/mark>:<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>Congaree National Park<\/strong><\/mark> (#310), first time we&#8217;ve visited a <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\">National Park Site<\/mark><\/strong> during a government shutdown. (The Visitor Center was closed, so no stamp and no new brochure.) <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>Congaree National Park<\/strong><\/mark> has the largest intact expanse of old growth bottomland hardwood forest remaining in the southeastern United States. Waters from the Congaree and Wateree Rivers sweep through the floodplain. Columbia!<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Saturday, we visited the Robert Mills Historic District and took 2 of 4 <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#090d8e\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Historic Columbia House Tours<\/mark><\/strong>.  We started at the <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#090d8e\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Robert Mills House<\/mark><\/strong>, showcases the skill of the architect (Robert Mills) who designed some of our nation&#8217;s most prominent buildings, including the Washington Monument.  It is also used to illustrate how enslavers and enslaved lived ante-bellum, and has an exhibit on Mary Boykin Chesnut, whose Civil War autobiography Gail has read. Then we toured <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#090d8e\" class=\"has-inline-color\">The Museum of Reconstruction Era at the Woodrow Wilson Family Home<\/mark><\/strong>, the&nbsp;only museum dedicated to interpreting the post-Civil War Reconstruction period and South Carolina&#8217;s only remaining presidential site.  This distinctive circa-1871 Italian villa-style residence was home to a 14-year-old boy named &#8220;Tommy&#8221; Woodrow Wilson.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sunday we returned for the <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#090d8e\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Journey to Freedom Tour<\/mark><\/strong> to learn more about Black history in Columbia.  It is a combined tour of both the <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#090d8e\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Mann-Simons Site<\/mark><\/strong> and the <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#090d8e\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Modjeska Monteith Simkins House<\/mark><\/strong>.  The Mann-Simons Site was home to the same entrepreneurial African American family for nearly 130 years.  Therefor, it traces the journey of Columbia\u2019s African American community from enslavement through urban renewal.  Modjeska Monteith Simkins practiced social activism from a young age. Her career involved working with local and national civil rights leaders and NAACP lawyers such as Thurgood Marshall, who stayed at her home. Simkins received the Order of the Palmetto-the State of South Carolina&#8217;s highest honor-before her death in 1992.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow aligncenter\" class=\"has-inline-color\">South Carolina State Museum<\/mark><\/strong>, along the banks of the Congaree River.  <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#730202\" class=\"has-inline-color\">WOW!<\/mark><\/strong>  It has four floors of exhibits, which we spent ~2.5 hours exploring before we had to go to our tour (above).  We also saw the Icelandic show, <strong>\u00c1r\u00f3ra<\/strong>, about the Northern Lights, in the planetarium.  We returned on Tuesday for a couple more hours, to explore what we missed on Sunday.  We even got to see &#8220;real time&#8221; sun flares in the observatory (funded by <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#090d8e\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><em>Boeing<\/em><\/mark><\/strong>).  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tuesday afternoon we also had a picnic at the nearby <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#090d8e\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Columbia Canal and Riverfront Park<\/mark><\/strong>.  There we learned its history and took a (very short, due to construction) walk along the Canal Towpath, on the very skinny island between the Congaree River and the Canal.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div
