{"id":16791,"date":"2026-03-23T09:14:18","date_gmt":"2026-03-23T16:14:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/streaming2nps.com\/?p=16791"},"modified":"2026-03-26T07:55:58","modified_gmt":"2026-03-26T14:55:58","slug":"mammoth-cave","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/streaming2nps.com\/?p=16791","title":{"rendered":"Mammoth Cave"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color\" style=\"color:#090d8e\"><strong>First Camping-in \/ 1st <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\">National Park<\/mark> visited in Kentucky<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This 4 day stop was all and <strong>only<\/strong> about&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Visiting <mark style=\"font-weight: bold; background-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0); color: rgb(29, 106, 6);\" class=\"has-inline-color\">1<\/mark> new <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\">National Park <\/mark>&#8230;<mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Mammoth Cave National Park<\/mark><\/strong> (#318)<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The world&#8217;s longest known cave system, featuring over&nbsp;426 miles&nbsp;of surveyed and mapped passageways. As a massive, multi-level limestone labyrinth, exploration continues, with geologists estimating hundreds of additional miles may still exist. This is possible, because it is a Dry Cave, with the limstone of the cave mostly protected by the shale and sandstone above it. It also means that stalagtites and stalagmites are rare. But it is <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#730202\" class=\"has-inline-color\">MAMMOTH<\/mark><\/strong>, hence its name (no wooly mammoths were found here.) It is also home to thousands of years of human history and a rich diversity of plant and animal life, earning it the title of UNESCO World Heritage Site and International Biosphere Region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We didn&#8217;t drive for our 3 days here, as we stayed at the campground only <sup>1<\/sup>\/<sub>2<\/sub> mile from the Visitor Center and there was lots to see and do right around here. We went on 4 different cave tours and hiked most of the local trails, logging over 5 miles underground (and over 2,000 stairs) and at least 10 miles above ground. Three of our tours went in and out the <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Historic Entrance<\/mark><\/strong>, so some overlap on them:  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Gothic Avenue Tour<\/mark><\/strong> about 1800s tourism and uses of Mammoth Cave (e.g. saltpeter production)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Discovery Tour<\/mark><\/strong> with some of the largest rooms in Mammoth Cave and info on indigenous peoples here, and site of the first ever sleep study done.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Historic Tour<\/mark><\/strong>, a &#8220;classic Mammoth Cave Tour&#8221; visiting many of the historic\u202fareas that originally made Mammoth Cave famous (some repeat from Gothic Avenue &amp; Discovery) and descended to\u202fmuch tighter places deep inside the cave, like Fat Mans Misery and Tall Mans Agony.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our last tour, <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Domes &amp; Dripstones<\/mark><\/strong>, (start and exit at 2 other entrances and in a wetter part of the cave), began in a sinkhole (immediately descended 280 stairs), passed through huge domes and tight spaces and ended in the dripstone section known as Frozen Niagara.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our hiking took us through the woods here and along and down to the <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Green River<\/mark><\/strong>, into which all the rivers of Mammoth Cave drain.  We even got to see the one remaining ferry across the Green River operating!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow aligncenter\" data-autoplay=\"true\" data-delay=\"5\" data-effect=\"slide\" style=\"--aspect-ratio:calc(750 \/ 423)\"><div class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow_container swiper\"><ul class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow_swiper-wrapper swiper-wrapper\"><li with our timing.  It was a perfect time of year. With the trees mostly still bare, we could see farther on our hikes above ground, and&#8230;it wasn&#8217;t too hot! But it was warm, good weather for hiking&#8230;and&#8230;for dry camping, as we never had to get out the generator!  We actually may have had the best 4-day period within a few weeks!  It was in the 20&#8217;s overnight, just before we got here!
