We did much of our exploring with them over the whole trip, as they even joined us for an afternoon before we got to Bluemont and joined us for a day in Harpers Ferry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"has-text-align-center has-text-color wp-block-heading\" style=\"color:#090d8e\"><strong>Highlights<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/streaming2nps.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/2016-03-AT-Hike-to-Bears-Den-1024x579.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1784\" width=\"253\" height=\"143\" srcset=\"https:\/\/streaming2nps.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/2016-03-AT-Hike-to-Bears-Den-1024x579.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/streaming2nps.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/2016-03-AT-Hike-to-Bears-Den-300x170.jpg 300w, https:\/\/streaming2nps.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/2016-03-AT-Hike-to-Bears-Den-768x434.jpg 768w, https:\/\/streaming2nps.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/2016-03-AT-Hike-to-Bears-Den-1536x868.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/streaming2nps.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/2016-03-AT-Hike-to-Bears-Den.jpg 1880w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 253px) 100vw, 253px\" \/><figcaption>Michael, Kathy, Mark, Gail at Bears Den<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We went hiking on a few different portions of the <strong>Appalachian Trail<\/strong>, including Bears Den and Buzzard Hill around Bluemont, and from <em>Virginia through Harpers Ferry, West Virginia to Maryland<\/em>&#8230; completing the the entire West Virginia portion of the AT.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With a loaner pair of Hiking Poles from Michael &amp; Kathy, Gail discovered that they really help with &#8220;the knees&#8221; (and bought her own pair, the next time she went to REI.)  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/streaming2nps.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/2016-03-Winchester-National-Cemetary-JMWorthington-1-825x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1783\" width=\"148\" height=\"182\"\/><figcaption>Gail w JM Worthington<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We hiked around <strong>Cool Springs<\/strong> and took a day trip to <strong>Winchester, VA<\/strong>.  In Winchester, Gail found the grave site of her Great-Great-Great-Great Uncle <strong>JM Worthington<\/strong>, who was killed in the 3rd Battle of Winchester in the <strong><span style=\"color:#1160b5\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Civil War<\/span><\/strong>.  We had a couple of days exploring <strong>Harpers Ferry<\/strong>, at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers.  With Michael &amp; Kathy, we checked out&#8230;was it 3 local Breweries and a Winery?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"has-text-color wp-block-heading\" style=\"color:#090d8e\">We visited&nbsp;<strong><span style=\"color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\">4 National Park Sites<\/span><\/strong>&nbsp;in the process, <\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">including more <strong><span style=\"color:#1160b5\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Civil War Battle Sites<\/span><\/strong>, post the Sesquicentennial:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Cedar Creek &amp; Belle Grove National Historical Park<\/strong> (#85)<\/li><li><strong>Appalachian National Scenic Trail<\/strong> (#86)<\/li><li><strong>Cheasapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park<\/strong> (#87)<\/li><li><strong>Harper&#8217;s Ferry National Historical Park<\/strong> (#88)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Interesting note:  <strong>Harper&#8217;s Ferry<\/strong>, in addition to being the site of the AT Headquarters, John Brown&#8217;s Raid, Civil War Battles, etc. is also part of the <strong><span style=\"color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Lewis &amp; Clark National Historic Trail<\/span><\/strong>!
