We also hiked up to the peak where Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia borders meet.  And we camped in our <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\">11th National Park Campground!<\/mark> <\/strong> That&#8217;s 3 new <strong><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><a href=\"https:\/\/streaming2nps.com\/?page_id=4364\/#Camping-at-National-Parks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">NP Campgrounds<\/a><\/mark><\/strong><\/strong> in a month. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Visiting &amp; hiking <\/strong>(~18.5 miles)<strong> in <mark style=\"font-weight: bold; background-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0); color: rgb(29, 106, 6);\" class=\"has-inline-color\">1<\/mark> new <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\">National Park Site<\/mark> (5\/5 Kentucky <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\">NP<\/mark><\/strong>): <\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Cumberland Gap<\/mark> <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\">National Historical Park<\/mark><\/strong> (#324), a &#8220;hiking park&#8221; we were told, with 85 miles of trails and 14,000 acres of wilderness (in 3 states).  It has been protected, however, because the <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Cumberland Gap<\/mark><\/strong> was the first great gateway to the west.  The Wilderness Road was first the path of bison, Native Americans, and longhunters, before 300,000  pioneers crossed the Appalachians to settle America. During the Civil War, control passed back and forth between the Union and the Confederacy.\u00a0 We managed to visit all the &#8220;highlights&#8221;, except Hensley Settlement, open only in the summer.<br><br>Tuesday we started at the Visitor Center (in Kentucky) and a ranger drove us (<strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#c10707\" class=\"has-inline-color\">The Monster<\/mark><\/strong> is too long for the road) up to <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Pinnacle Overlook<\/mark><\/strong> (Kentucky &amp; Virginia). In the afternoon, we hiked (Kentucky &amp; Virginia) over the <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Cumberland Gap<\/mark><\/strong>, to the Tri-State Marker and Fort McCook, and back by the <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Wilderness Road<\/mark><\/strong>).  We stopped at the Iron Furnace (Tennessee) on our way back to camp (in Virginia), a ~4 mile hiking day.  <br><br>Wednesday was a no drive day, &#8220;just&#8221; a ~6-mile hike from the campground to <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Gap Cave<\/mark><\/strong> &amp; back.  Then yesterday&#8230;8.75 miles, 2,133&#8242; elevation gain, at the northeast end of the park.  A mile or so of the hike was along the ridge line, which constitutes the Kentucky\/Virginia border.  Beautiful view at our lunch stop at the <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\">White Rocks Overlook<\/mark><\/strong>.  We deserved our dinner out after all that&#8230;6.75 hours (5.75 of it actually hiking)!  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow aligncenter\" data-autoplay=\"true\" As might be expected, the Wilderness Road became a road for cars in the 20th century.
