{"id":17121,"date":"2026-04-15T09:47:49","date_gmt":"2026-04-15T16:47:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/streaming2nps.com\/?p=17121"},"modified":"2026-04-15T09:47:51","modified_gmt":"2026-04-15T16:47:51","slug":"west-virginia-national-rivers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/streaming2nps.com\/?p=17121","title":{"rendered":"West Virginia National Rivers"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color\" style=\"color:#090d8e\"><strong>And first camping in West Virginia<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Camping in <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>Little Beaver State Park<\/strong><\/mark> for 5 nights, giving us 4 days to (drive a lot, north &amp; south, and)&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Visit and hike <\/strong>(~17 miles)<strong> in <mark style=\"font-weight: bold; background-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0); color: rgb(29, 106, 6);\" class=\"has-inline-color\">3<\/mark> new <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\">National Park Sites<\/mark>:<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>New River Gorge National Park &amp; Preserve<\/strong><\/mark> (#325) protects a rugged, whitewater river flowing northward through deep canyons, among the oldest rivers on the continent. The park encompasses over 70,000 acres of land along the <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>New River<\/strong><\/mark>, rich in cultural and natural history. Visiting over 4 days, we drove over some &#8220;interesting bridges&#8221; and got to all <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>5<\/strong><\/mark> of the &#8220;Main Park Destinations&#8221;:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Sandstone Visitor Center<\/mark><\/strong>, nearest open <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\">VC<\/mark><\/strong> to us and &#8220;gateway to the southern portion of New River Gorge NP&#8221;.  We started here to make plans, then drove south, up the river to Hinton, over the bridge and back north to&#8230;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Sandstone Falls<\/mark><\/strong>, the largest waterfall on the New River, spans the river where it is 1500 feet wide. The river drops 10 to 25 feet.  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Canyon Rim Visitor Center<\/mark><\/strong>, at the north end, with the classic overlook of the <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>New River Gorge Bridge<\/strong><\/mark>, 178 steps down (and back up).  The New River Gorge Bridge (completed October 1977) turned a 40-minute drive into less than a minute, removing the need to navigate down narrow mountain roads across an ancient river.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Thurmond Historic District<\/mark><\/strong>, once among the greatest railroad\/coal mining towns along the Chesapeake &amp; Ohio Railway.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Grandview<\/mark><\/strong>, just 15 minutes from our campsite, provides some of the most dramatic scenery found in the park. The main overlook is the highest point in the park, 1,400 feet above the river.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow aligncenter\" data-autoplay=\"true\" data-delay=\"5\" data-effect=\"slide\" style=\"--aspect-ratio:calc(750 \/ 423)\"><div class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow_container swiper\"><ul class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow_swiper-wrapper River<\/strong><\/mark> (#326), where a 10.5-mile section is preserved as a living landscape that provides an unspoiled experience for visitors and a haven for a variety of plants and animals.  The river and the rugged and ancient gorge it has carved is a richly diverse and scenic area of the southern Appalachians.  We took a hike on the only trail, the Bluestone Turnpike Trail, a 9.5-mile moderate hiking trail that follows the path of an old riverbank road, farmed and timbered until the 1940&#8217;s.  It connects\u00a0Bluestone State Park\u00a0and\u00a0Pipestem Resort State Park.  We accessed it from the <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Bluestone State Park<\/mark><\/strong> at the north end, and hiked in 2 miles style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>Gauley River National Recreation Area<\/strong><\/mark> (#327), where the 25 miles of free-flowing Gauley River and the six miles of the Meadow River pass through scenic gorges and valleys containing a wide variety of natural and cultural features. The several class V+ rapids making it one of the most adventurous white water boating rivers in the east.  We mostly just looked at it (based on Ranger Recommendations), from the <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Summersville Dam<\/mark><\/strong> (second highest earthen dam in eastern US) and some overlooks in <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Carnifex Ferry Battlefield State Park<\/mark><\/strong> (which also gave us a surprise new Civil War site.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow aligncenter\" data-autoplay=\"true\" data-delay=\"5\" data-effect=\"slide\" style=\"--aspect-ratio:calc(750 \/ 423)\"><div class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow_container swiper\"><ul class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow_swiper-wrapper
