We&#8217;ve added 3-5 times as many things to do\/see around Colorado Springs to our <strong>Next Time List<\/strong> as those we saw or did here. That was partly due to this being a bit of a &#8220;chore stop&#8221;, being our last stop not in the &#8220;wilderness&#8221; for&#8230;3+ weeks. We also did a bit of driving (325 miles), some I-25 every day, and through some gorgeous red rock and other canyons, several times on route 24. Sunday (our longest driving day), we started at 5,618&#8242; where we&#8217;re camping, drove over Ute Pass at 9,165&#8242; enroute to Florissant and drove over Victor Pass at 10,201&#8242; one our return to camp, for our&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Visit to <mark style=\"font-weight: bold; background-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0); color: rgb(29, 106, 6);\" class=\"has-inline-color\">1<\/mark> new <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\">National Park Site<\/mark>:<\/strong> <\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#1d6a06\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>Florissant Fossils Beds National Monument<\/strong><\/mark> (#367), where, beneath a grassy mountain valley in central Colorado lies one of the richest and most diverse fossil deposits in the world. Petrified redwood stumps up to 14 feet wide and thousands of detailed fossils of insects and plants reveal the story of a very different, prehistoric Colorado. We explored outdoor exhibits in and behind the visitor center (featuring massive petrified tree stumps), took the self guided hikes on the\u00a0Ponderosa Loop,\u00a0Petrified Forest Loop, and\u00a0Geologic Trails, and visited the 1878\u00a0Hornbek Homestead.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow aligncenter\" data-autoplay=\"true\" data-delay=\"5\" data-effect=\"slide\" style=\"--aspect-ratio:calc(750 \/ 423)\"><div class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow_container swiper\"><ul class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow_swiper-wrapper swiper-wrapper\"><li style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#090d8e\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Gold Belt Tour Scenic and Historic Byway<\/mark><\/strong> to Cripple Creek, CO and then on to Victor. We saw MASSIVE Gold Mining operations and one more <a href=\"https:\/\/streaming2nps.com\/?page_id=17722\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Thomas Dambo Troll<\/a> (one of two in Colorado)! Then we returned to camp via a slightly different route.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:15px\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#090d8e\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Rita the Rock Planter<\/mark><\/strong><br>100 Suns &#8211; Costco for awhile and made some <strong><em><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#a1bcf7\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Lizzy<\/mark><\/em><\/strong> purchases at Camping World and Home Depot. Like we said&#8230;&#8221;Chore Stop&#8221;. In the afternoon we drove north to visit the <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#090d8e\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Western Museum of Mining &amp; Industry<\/mark><\/strong>, in time for the 1:00 Tour.<strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#090d8e\" class=\"has-inline-color\"> <\/mark><\/strong>It was excellent, especially since the tour guide operated all the machines they have, as he walked us through.  After going around the museum again on our own, we drove the whole mile to the brandy new <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#090d8e\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Air Force Academy Visitor Center<\/mark><\/strong>. Very nicely done. We applied for access to visit the Academy campus while in Colorado Springs, but never heard Yay, nor Nay. Oh well. then make another stop.  Instead we spent the entire afternoon there, 5+ hours&#8230;Museum, walking\/hiking the <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#090d8e\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Central Garden Trail <\/mark><\/strong>and various off-shoots, driving the park loop drive, hiking to see the <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#090d8e\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Siamese Twins<\/mark><\/strong>, and stopping for a good look around <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#090d8e\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Balanced Rock <\/mark><\/strong>and <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#090d8e\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Steamboat Rock<\/mark><\/strong>. <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#090d8e\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Pikes Peak<\/mark><\/strong>.
