We stayed in Lihu’e at The Kaua’i Inn<\/mark><\/strong>, opened as Hotel Fairview in 1890, the oldest hotel in Hawai’i, other than Volcano House<\/mark><\/strong> on the Big Island, where we’ll be staying for a couple of days. It has “plantation-style rooms”, is near Nawiliwili Harbor and the H\u0101\u02bbupu Mountains. It is also where John Wayne, Lee Marvin, and the rest of the cast and crew stayed while filming Donovan’s Reef<\/em> in 1962, where they were known to swap stories with locals by the pool. And…we actually stayed in John Wayne’s Room!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After checking in, we did a short drive around Lihu’e to the Menehune Fishpond Overlook<\/mark><\/strong>, the Ninini Point Lighthouse<\/mark><\/strong>, and the Kuki’i Point Lighthouse<\/mark><\/strong> before grabbing an early dinner, where Gail started her Hawai’ian adventure with an excellent Poke Bowl.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
