Cornfields and the Northern Lights

Staying at only our 4th Harvest Host site, in Dakota, Minnesota (just a hop, skip and a jump from the Mississippi River), we had a very pleasant day yesterday. Shopping at the Farm Store, we bought some farm fresh eggs, our first ever Beef Bacon (Apple Cinnamon), Beer Cheddar Brats, a skirt steak & a ribeye, stew meat, chicken thighs, and ground steak. The freezer is full. Looking forward to a special breakfast of farm fresh beef bacon and eggs…tomorrow? (The corn fields here are to feed the cattle…and there are chickens running around, too!)

OH! The food store is self serve!!! Very trusting. We’re also only a hop, skip and a jump from I-90!

We spent the afternoon visiting Pickwick Mill, a historic grist mill in Winona, Minnesota…Flour Milling History at its best! The 6 story stone building was made from local limestone in the 1860’s. During the Civil War, it produced 100 barrels of flour a day. We got to see the 4′ x 20′ water wheel start up and then listen to it while we explored the 6 floors of machinery and other exhibits. Then we took a little drive down the Minnesota side of the Great River Road and across the Mississippi to La Crosse, Wisconsin. There we ran a couple of errands, visited Grandad Bluff Park (600-ft high bluff overlooking the city of La Crosse and the Mississippi), and had a nice dinner at the Waterfront Restaurant.

After sunset, we got to see the Northern Lights! Amazing how one can see just a “glow” with the naked eye, but the camera picks up so many more colors!

Moving on down the Great River Road today!

I saw the northern light also, pale compared to Charlton and Maine.
