And more WIND!!!

We spent the last 4 nights in Carlsbad, New Mexico (actually at the KOA 20 miles north). We spent the first day hanging in Lizzy in High Winds. The next 2 days we drove ~140 miles round trip / day, to Guadalupe Mountains National Park (#59-Revisit), to go hiking. We discovered that the best reason for having canceled camping there was actually the WIND, not the COLD. Just a couple of days before we would have gotten there, they were turning people away and a big rig blew over…TOTALLED!

Anyway, the first day we went to Pine Springs and hiked 8 miles…to Frijole Ranch and back and the Smith Spring Loop Trail from the ranch. The second day we went to McKittrick Canyon and hiked up the canyon to Pratt Cabin, Grotto, and Hunter Line Shack and back, another 8 miles (less elevation gain). Mark got left behind a couple of times on the second day, watching the trout in the water we were crossing. He discovered last night, that the only native trout left in Texas (due to the heat) are in the Guadalupe Mountains!

Sampling of ~400 pictures-hiking in Guadalupe Mountains!!
