While we do a lot of our route planning around visits to National Park Sites (and State Capitols, etc.), we try to leave time for other sightseeing. The Bonus Sights around Grants, New Mexico, were

  • Sky City Cultural Center & Haak’u Museum, all about Acoma Pueblo, not only the Oldest Pueblo, but the oldest continuously inhabited community in the United States
  • New Mexico Mining Museum, all about Uranium Mining in New Mexico, including, in the basement, a Uranium Mine experience!
  • Historic Route 66
AND…Hopefully our last SNOW!!!

Five nights in Grants, and it only Snowed, a little, the first night. And it did get COLD…down to 14o one night! This is hopefully our last snow of the 2023 winter, as our next stops should all be warmer, if you can trust the weather app!

As for the National Park Sites which brought us to Grants, El Malpais (#191) and El Morro National Monuments (#192), WOW! El Morro, where ancestral Puebloans, Spanish, and American travelers carved over 2,000 signatures, dates, messages, and petroglyphs. El Malpais, a diverse volcanic landscape with incredible geologic features such as lava flows, cinder cones, lava tube caves, and sandstone bluffs.

Off for our last stop in Nuclear New Mexico!
Trinity Site on Saturday!
