First Stop, Amarillo, Texas!

After 6 weeks in New Mexico, it was time to head Northeast, across the Prairie and Midwest, to Pittsburgh by May 3. We made it out of New Mexico on I-40 and half-way across the Texas Panhandle to Amarillo, our longest driving day since we took off in January. In 3 days, The Beast got another 5K Oil Change (80,000 miles, can you believe it?!?), we got 5 loads of laundry done, we finished our taxes, and we rode out another sandstorm in Lizzy. We also had time to visit:

  • Alibates Flint Quarries National Monument (#193), with fascinating history, we learned on a Ranger hike to the Flint Quarries
  • Lake Meredith National Recreation Area (#194), very windy afternoon, so no hiking, and barely made it back to Lizzy before the Sandstorm. But it was also a little “under whelming”, anyway.
  • Palo Duro Canyon State Park which was beautiful (and another CCC developed park)! Have to come back some time, maybe to camp, but definitely to hike. Only had a couple of hours this trip, so just visited the Museum and drove the loop road into the canyon.
Off for Oklahoma City tomorrow!
