Last Stop in the Southern Appalachians

Camping between the Blue Ridge Mountains to the east and and the Alleghany Mountains to the west. We had a very nice visit with an “old” friend of Mark’s on the eastern side the Blue Ridge one day, and on another…

A re-visit to 2 National Park Sites:
  • Shenandoah National Park (#42-Revisit), where there’s so much to explore, but this visit we only spent an afternoon driving south on the central section of Skyline Drive, from Thornton Gap Entrance to Swift Run Gap Entrance. Beautiful day on “The Greatest Single Feature1 of the park, completed by the CCC.
  • Appalachian Trail (#86-revisit), on which we took a short walk. How could we not? It runs 107 miles in Shenandoah NP, crossing Skyline Drive, 32 times!
And a short Civil War stop

Driving around, we stopped in New Market to see the Monument to the 54th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Regiment. They suffered the second-highest regimental loss in the Battle of New Market.

Off for New Jersey…LOOOONG Day ahead…300+ miles!

And tomorrow we’ll be heading to Troy, NY for the weekend (without Lizzy). It’s time for a “Touring Break”. The next 3 months we’ll be spending with family & friends in the Northeast (Jersey Shore & Central Massachusetts) and at home in Bellevue, Washington.
