Most of the day was spent around Wrangell…in town and on a Stikine River tour, heading out late for our last day.
Wrangell Morning
Thursday morning we arrived in quiet Wrangell, an area inhabited by the Tlingit people for thousands of years and the only town in Alaska to have been ruled by four nations – the Tlingit, Russia, England, and the United States. After breakfast, we spent a few hours exploring the town, starting at Petroglyph Beach and ending at the Wrangell Museum, where we learned about Wrangell’s colorful past & present.
Getting off the Admiralty Dream at pretty low tide
OK, so our really first stop was the post office, to mail postcards!

Bears greeted us at the Wrangell Museum
In case it’s not clear, Salmon (5 types) were/are/will be a very big industry for Alaska…display at the Wrangell Museum
Stikine River Jet Boat cruise to Shakes Glacier
In the afternoon, we took a 3+ hours jet boat tour out of Wrangell, on the Stikine River, the fastest navigable free-flowing river in North America, to the Shakes Glacier and back.
Bald Eagle watching us take off in the jet boat
Harbor Seals resting on a mud flat in the Stikine, hard to discern from beached logs at a distance
One of several Float Houses we saw on the Stikine…illegal to build a cabin on public land, but not on water…a loophole of sorts
Shakes Glacier
Pictured at another Glacier!
Waterfall noticed on our return to Wrangell
Approaching Wrangel, one can clearly see where the silty water of the Stikine River meets the Pacific Ocean
Leaving Wrangell in the evening
We started cruising away from Wrangell over dinner, back on the boat. To get to our next stop, we had to travel through the very narrow Wrangell Narrows.
Heading into the Wrangell Narrows, location at 8:00 PM
In the Wrangell Narrows, with red & green lights marking the safe channel, about 8:00 PM
Passing Petersburh, Alaska coming out of the Wrangell Narrows, about 9:40 PM

… and about 25 yards to the left about 100 gulls were crowded on the remaing dock rail. The eagle gets his space!
