Camping at Holly Point, day trips to Raleigh

We just hung out in the Campground a couple of days and went into Raleigh 3 times. We had a lovely visit and dinner with RSE friends Eric-J and Kristen and explored a few Raleigh sights, including…

Touring 1 new State Capitol:
  • North Carolina State Capitol in Raleigh (#44), where we were joined by Eric-J for a tour of the capitol building. Raleigh was picked to be the capitol of North Carolina after the War for Independence1, because it was within 10 miles of the search committee’s favorite tavern, even though it wasn’t even a town, yet. Now one of the best surviving examples of Greek Revival architecture, the capitol building is little changed since its completion in 1840. The governor’s office is on the 1st floor, but the legislature and judiciary work elsewhere, so the 2nd & 3rd floors are largely “museum”.
Other Raleigh Sites

We walked up and down Fayetteville St. after the capitol tour on Saturday, and spent a drizzly Tuesday afternoon in Raleigh, as well. We explored the City of Raleigh Museum (in an old hardware store) and toured, drank hot chocolate and shopped for chocolate at the Videri Chocolate Factory.
Last stop was a visit to Dix Park, where our primary goal was to find all the Thomas Dambo Trolls, finished just last week. We found all 5! Very Cool! For example, Mother Strong Tail‘s tail meanders through the woods and around Dix, who is holding the tail tip in his left hand.

Time to find some of the Thomas Dambo “Northwest Trolls” at home?

Around Holly Point Campground:

We hung out in camp some and got out to explore and get a bit of excersice. We had decent antenna TV here, so we watched all 5 World Series games, making for late-ish nights & subsequently mornings. (OK, except for Game 3 (the 18-inning one)…Gail gave up at the end of inning 9 and Mark at the end of inning 13!) Go Toronto!2

Off for South Carolina

PREVIOUS Traveling Where Now? . . . . . NEXT Traveling Where Now?
  1. The first capitol of North Carolina, from the time of it being a British Colony, was in New Bern, which we visited in the spring of 2024. ↩︎
  2. Aside from hoping to say that the Seattle Mariners are arguably the 2nd best team in baseball this year (given what it took for Toronto to win the ALCS), there’s also the Toronto Blue Jay Fans. You’ve got to love the kindness of Canadians. Per the Seattle Times, “~250 Blue Jays fans have donated nearly $10,000 to the Seattle Children’s hospital since the Oct. 20 game, a form of congratulations to the Mariners on a successful season and an expression of gratitude for a well-played series.” ↩︎
