Overview
We took take a Road Trip to Eastern Washington & Western Idaho, planned around visiting Stehekin, Mark’s RSE brother Fred-U in Stagle, ID, and Gail’s old friend Gaye-T (with Sandra-S) in Kennewick, WA. We chose not to take Lizzy, as we were planning to move on frequently, we’d have to leave her for our 2 nights in Stehekin, and we were invited house guests for another 4 of our 10 nights:
- Chelan, WA, after a nice drive…to catch morning boat
- Stehekin, WA at the north end of 50 mile long Lake Chelan
- Grand Coulee, WA to catch tour of Grand Coulee Dam
- Stagle, ID to visit Fred & Ruth
- Lewiston, ID, to visit sites of Nez Perce NHP
- Kennewick, WA to hang out with Gaye & Sandra @ Gaye’s
Highlights
We took the Lady of the Lake up Lake Chelan to Stehikin, and spend a couple of days exploring/hiking. That was something Gail had wanted to do since the 80’s. Power Guy Mark got to re-tour Coulee Dam and the Hanford B-Reactor. We toured Nez Perce NHP from Lewiston, ID and both got to re-connect with “old Friends”: Mark with Fred and Gail’s “mini-reunion” with Gaye & Sandra. They were both very nice visits…catching up and making a new friend (Fred’s wife Ruth). Fred & Gaye also took us touring.
- From Stagle: boat trip on Lake Pend Oreille, visit to Schweitzer Ski Resort, walk & lunch around Sand Point
- From Kennewick: day trip to Columbia Wildlife Refuge, Summer Falls, and Dry Falls State Park.
We realized later, that we had boated on our first 2 of the 5 Deepest US Lakes (which inspired us to get to all 5):
- Lake Chelan (3rd Deepest, at 1,486 feet.)
- Lake Pend Oreille (5th Deepest, at 1,152 feet.)
We got in 2 new and 3 re-visits to 5 National Parks:
- Two of the Sites in the North Cascades National Park Complex:
- Lake Chelan National Recreation Area (#141)
- North Cascades National Park (#38-Revisited)
- Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area (#37-Revisited)
- One of the Pacific Northwest Historic Parks:
- Nez Perce National Historic Park (#142)
- Manhattan Project National Historical Park (#36-Revisited)
And we visited parts off 4 National Trails:
- Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail
- Pacific Northwest National Scenic Trail
- Nez Perce National Historic Trail
- Lewis & Clark National Historic Trail
