Overview

We took a short side Road Trip to Virginia and West Virginia, instead of returning directly to the Jersey Shore from Donora, PA after Easter with Family.

We stayed with Michael-D & Kathy a couple of days in Bluemont, VA, and did our first hiking on the Appalachian Trail. We did much of our exploring with them over the whole trip, as they even joined us for an afternoon before we got to Bluemont and joined us for a day in Harpers Ferry.

Highlights

Michael, Kathy, Mark, Gail at Bears Den

We went hiking on a few different portions of the Appalachian Trail, including Bears Den and Buzzard Hill around Bluemont, and from Virginia through Harpers Ferry, West Virginia to Maryland… completing the the entire West Virginia portion of the AT.

With a loaner pair of Hiking Poles from Michael & Kathy, Gail discovered that they really help with “the knees” (and bought her own pair, the next time she went to REI.)

Gail w JM Worthington

We hiked around Cool Springs and took a day trip to Winchester, VA. In Winchester, Gail found the grave site of her Great-Great-Great-Great Uncle JM Worthington, who was killed in the 3rd Battle of Winchester in the Civil War. We had a couple of days exploring Harpers Ferry, at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers. With Michael & Kathy, we checked out…was it 3 local Breweries and a Winery?

We visited 4 National Park Sites in the process,

including more Civil War Battle Sites, post the Sesquicentennial:

  • Cedar Creek & Belle Grove National Historical Park (#85)
  • Appalachian National Scenic Trail (#86)
  • Cheasapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park (#87)
  • Harper’s Ferry National Historical Park (#88)

Interesting note: Harper’s Ferry, in addition to being the site of the AT Headquarters, John Brown’s Raid, Civil War Battles, etc. is also part of the Lewis & Clark National Historic Trail! The Lewis & Clark Expedition was Outfitted, in part, at Harper’s Ferry.
