Overview

We took our first long Lizzy Trip in 2+ years…50 days, mostly in the Rocky Mountains and High Plains (sleeping above 4,000′ for 35 nights….highest was ~7,165′ @ Laramie, WY) We originally called this trip “Loop thru The Rockies”. But after a conversation with a native of Cheyenne, calling himself a “flatlander”, we realized we were actually spending lots of time on the plains, looking at the mountains, not actually in the mountains.

We stayed at 17 different places, in 7 States: Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, and Nevada (technically). We planned one night in Baker City, OR, but spent it in Boise, ID, instead. One State was new to visit…Colorado, #49 Together!!! And 2 were new to Camp in…Colorado, #22 & Utah, #23.

Nevada Technicality

We did stay one night in West Wendover, Nevada, but only to sleep & eat (<24 hr). Wendover sits on the Nevada/Utah border. It is the only town in Nevada that officially observes Mountain Time, because it is inextricably linked to Wendover, Utah, home to the Bonneville Salt Flats & Historic Wendover Airfield.

Highlights

We actually spent a good bit of time visiting friends in 5 locations (not just exploring and working on our “Travel Goals”):

  • First night out, we had Brews & Pizza with Ginny, Benny, Linda & Steve, and Ginny & Benny also spent the night there, as did we.
  • Day 3, we spent a day with Mark’s RSE Brother Fred & wife Ruth in Sagle, Idaho.
  • Anja, a friend of Gail’s, visited us in Loveland, CO.
  • Gail spent an afternoon in Bloomfield, CO visiting Audrey & Joe, their eldest Aaron (Alyson’s cousin), his wife and…1 month old son.
  • Was that a mini RPI 75 Reunion, staying with Gary in Park City, UT, July 4 Weekend?

Most of the trip was exploring many new (and some repeat) sites, with some “recurring themes”, such as Historic Oregon, California, Pioneer Mormon, & Pony Express Trails; Homestead Sites (and Sheep Wagons); Pictographs & Petroglyphs; Fossils:

We took 4 State Capitol Tours, saw an afternoon game at 1 MLB Stadium, visited 10 National Parks (5 New), and visited a variety of Museums, etc. We managed to Hike/Walk quite a bit, even at altitude! Longest was 7 miles in Dinosaur National Monument.
