The ORIGINAL Las Vegas…Las Vegas, New Mexico

Seriously…this Las Vegas predates Nevada’s by 70 years, having been established by a Mexican land grant in 1835.  We just spent 4 nights here.

Two National Parks in 3 days, from 2 locations!

We got here on Saturday, after spending Friday (our last day in Albuquerque) on a long day trip to visit all 3 sites of the Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument (#187).
We then spent Sunday (our first day here) visiting Fort Union National Monument (#188) on the Santa Fe National Historic Trail. Both were Fascinating…lots of History!

Monday was a “Hang Out, Do Stuff” day, starting with an all-you-can-eat New Mexico breakfast at the KOA (NM meaning both green & red chilis were involved). Aside from our doing our laundry, having Zoom Meetings, getting stuff in the mail, etc., Gail:

  • Finally finished our “South through Arizona” Album (and associated National Park Albums) for yesterday’s post.
  • Got out the clippers & scissors and cut our hair! We have been On the Road for 2 Months! These are our first haircuts.

Yesterday, we explored Las Vegas. Lots of filming has been done here (Easy Rider, Red Dawn, Longmire, No Country for Old Men, to name a few), and we ran into it! When we started walking from the Plaza to the Railroad Station/Info Center, the main road was blocked. They were filming for Outer Range (a series on Amazon Prime, starring Josh Brolin). We had to walk around on a city trail. No, we didn’t get jobs as Extras, nor did we meet Josh Brolin. But we did have a nice 4+ mile stroll around town and nice lunch at The Skillet.

Off for Santa Fe…for 10 whole nights…and more COLD & SNOW!

I think that’s pretty cool that the KOA serves a New Mexico breakfast! And cool about the filming going on in Las Vegas. Love following your adventures.
