Enough to close National Parks, delay school openings!
We got to Santa Fe last Wednesday, with threats of a snow storm coming in a day, so Thursday we made it into the city. We wandered around Old Town for awhile, visiting Santa Fe Plaza, Loretto Chapel, the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi, and the Oldest Building. We “climbed” up to Fort Marcy and the Cross of the Martyrs, where we could see the storm coming in! By the time we got back to The Beast, it was raining/sleeting/snowing? Or was that Graupel?
Thank Goodness we stopped at Albertsons on the way back to camp on the 16th (got Corned Beef & Cabbage)…because it was snowing by the time we got back to Lizzy and St. Patty’s Day was a SNOW DAY! Really. We just stayed in Lizzy (well…other than Mark trying to keep the accumulation off The Beast) and used our new InstantPot to make the most tender Corned Beef ever! Nice, cozy, snow day.
We spent time on Saturday and Sunday visiting nearby Pecos National Historic Park (#189). It was closed on Friday and had a 3-hour delayed opening on Saturday. We visited the Museum and took Ranger Tours of the 3 areas of the park:
- Forked Lightning Ranch (long term home of Greer Garson, among other things)
- Ancestral Sites (Pueblo & Mission Ruins)
- Civil War Battle of Glorieta Pass (farthest west Civil War Battle)
Note, we changed sites on the afternoon of the 18th (part of the Guadalupe Mountains Re-Route), to a spot with a little snow left, but awoke this morning to a little more snow!
Now off for an afternoon in Los Alamos

Snowing again now, first day of spring. Made it to Los Alamos, though. AND…the temps ARE about 15 degrees lower than normal for this time of year.
