Overview

Lizzy Route to Columbia, Coast & home

We got in another 3 week trip on the Columbia River and Pacific Coast near its mouth. The first stop was right on the Columbia on the Washington side, just east of the 80 miles of the Columbia Gorge National Scenic Area. The last 3 were revisits to some of our favorite places from our previous trip to the coast:

  • Maryhill State Park, on the Columbia River, Goldendale, WA, where we camped 2 nights with friends…1st time!
  • Cape Disappointment State Park, WA, SE corner of Washington on the north side of the mouth of the Columbia
  • Nehalem Bay State Park, near Manzanita, OR
  • Fort Stevens State Park, NE corner of Oregon on the south side of the mouth of the Columbia, near Astoria, OR

Highlights

Visit the Columbia Gorge

Columbia River at Mary Hill

This was our first trip to the Columbia Gorge. We camped, right on the river, just east of the 80 mile long Columbia Gorge National Scenic Area. Our friends Ginny & Benny joined us for 2 days, including Easter…our first time Camping with Friends. We were in the “middle of nowhere”, but discovered lots to visit nearby:

  • The astonishing Maryhill Art Museum
  • Glendale Observatory
  • Stonehenge Memorial & Klickitat County Veterans Memorial
  • The Dalles, Oregon where we found:
    • The Columbia Gorge Discovery Center / Wasco County Historical Museum
    • Riverfront Trail
    • and a HUGE Google Data Center!

Revisit Mouth of the Columbia

Benson Beach

Had lots more time on the Washington side of the Columbia, this visit…lots of time to:

  • Visit Lewis & Clark Historic Sites
  • Visit Fort Columbia
  • Hike more more trails at Cape Disappointment: McKensie Head/Battery 247 and North Head Trails
  • Drive up the Washington Long Beach Peninsula to hike at Leadbetter Point State Park
  • Return to Astoria, walk the waterfront and visit The Flavel House, Oregon Film Museum, Cannery Museum

Revisit Nehalem Bay/Manzanita

Oswald West State Park

We fell in love with Manzanita on our first visit a month ago, so were excited to return.

  • Visited Tillamook Creamery again
  • Bought more chocolate at Manzanita Sweets
  • Did a new hike in Oswald West State Park
  • Finished the Tillamook Coast 3 Cape Scenic Tour, visiting
    • Cape Kiwanda
    • Original Pelican Brewery, right on the beach in Pacific City
  • And we can’t forget the Elk Herd!
