Lizzy Adventure Album at:
Overview
After Mark got an offer on his house, we took Lizzy on a ~4 week holiday to New England, planned around our 1st National Park Travelers Club Convention and a family reunion in Connecticut. We spent the first 2 weeks in Sandwich, on Cape Cod, right over the canal, with LOTS of time touring LOTS of places. Then we spent 5 days on Long Island Sound in Connecticut and 6 days in central Massachusetts, with LOTS of family time.
- Shawmee-Crowell State Forest, Sandwich, MA, from which we did MOST of Trip Touring
- Rocky Neck State Park, East Lyme, CT, close to Guy Family Reunion in Storrs
- Wells State Park, Sturbridge, MA, for close access to Lake Lashaway and Gail’s family
- Allaire State Park, Allaire, NJ, “Home” while we close the sale on Mark’s Jersey Shore Home
Cape Cod Highlights
While we were camped for 2 weeks in Sandwich, MA, we had our first Airstream camping dinner guest, Mark’s RSE Brother Matt-W from Ipswich.
And while there we spent a few days staying close and exploring around Sandwich & Cape Cod Canal, finding:
- Army Corp of Engineers Cape Cod Canal Museum & Visitors Center
- Coast Guard Heritage Museum
- Sandwich Trout Hatchery
- Sandwich Farmers Market
- Scusset Beach at the NW end of the Canal
- Buzzards Bay at the SE end of the Canal
We picked Shawmee Crowell to camp for our 2 weeks, as it was pretty much in the middle of all the Day Trips we had planned.
- New Bedford, MA, which we visited multiple times
- Cape Cod Seashore & Provincetown, where we celebrated Gail’s Birthday and returned another day
- Martha’s Vineyard, day trip, via ferry to visit Gail’s niece, Caitlin
- Brookline & Quincy, MA for 3 National Parks in-a-Day
In New Bedford, we attended our 1st National Park Travelers Club Convention. We attended 2 banquets, visited New Bedford Whaling Museum, and took a Bus Tour into Rhode Island. There we visited 3 Rhode Island National Park Sites and took
- State Capitol Tour (#3) – Providence, Rhode Island.
By the time we left the Cape, we had also visited a Lighthouse (only one, as those on Cape Cod Seashore were closed while we were there):
- Gay Head Lighthouse at Aquinnah on Martha’s Vineyard
And visited 7 National Parks, in Massachusetts & Rhode Island:
- Two of the New England “Intellectuals” National Parks
- Roger Williams National Memorial (#109)
- Frederick Law Olmsted National Historic Site (#113)
- Two of the New England Industrial History Parks
- Blackstone River Valley National Historical Park (#110)
- New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park (#111)
- Cape Cod National Seashore (#112)
- Two of the Presidential Sites-North Atlantic:
- John Fitzgerald Kennedy National Historic Site (#114)
- Adams National Historical Park (#115)
- Touro Synagogue National Historic Site
Family Highlights
During our 11 days camping in Connecticut and central Mass:
From Rocky Neck State Park, Gail had time to explore the park and visit cousin Sue-L & Norm, while Mark took a quick trip to NJ to handle some items regarding the sale of his house. When he returned, we attended the Guy Family Reunion in Storrs, at Cousin Sandi-L & Re’nee’s. We celebrated Aunt Carolyn’s Birthday and saw SO MANY of Gail’s Relatives, including all 3 Florida Cousins (Jeb, Lee-Lee, Bill-G), Pennsylvania Cousin Lee-Ann, and all of Gail’s Brothers (Brian-W, Barry-W, Bruce-W, and Charlie-W)!
When we got to Wells State Park, we mostly just hung out on Lake Lashaway with Nicky…best family time…eating lobstah on the lake and playing cards!
