Overview

Our first longer trip with Lizzy was an escape from the NE Winter. We hightailed it from NJ to Virginia and back, the first & last days…6+ hour days. Gail even took her 1st turns at driving The Beast pulling Lizzy on the highway…the middle 2 hour stretch on both of those legs, thus twice on the Beltway around Washington DC at rush hour!

Then we spent a couple of weeks meandering South down the coast, 3+ weeks in Florida east to west, and back North on a route a bit inland. When done, we had spent 1+ weeks in Virginia, 2 days in South Carolina, and 3 weeks each in Georgia & Florida. Staying at 11 places:

• Santee State Park, South Carolina
• Skidaway State Park, Georgia
• Fort McAllister Historic State Park, Georgia
• Faver-Dykes State Park, Florida
• Aunt Carolyn’s Backyard, Florida
• Winter Quarters Manatee RV Park, Florida
• Reed Bingham State Park, Georgia
• Fort Yargo State Park, Georgia
• Fairy Stone State Park, Virginia
• Lake Anna State Park, Virginia

Highlights

We had lots of time on the trip visiting friends and family…sometimes for a meal, sometimes for days!

• Lunch with Deborah-T in Richmond
• Dinner with RSE Brother John-G & Ann in Richmond
• Lunch with Mark’s friend Rich in Hilton Head
• Lunch, touring & dinner with Dr. Lahey (Mark’s Phd Advisor) & his wife in St. Augustine
• Camping in Aunt Carolyn’s back yard, and dinners with her, Bill-G, Gerri & Carol
• Dinner with DuWayne & Charlene
• Lots of time with Linda & Steve, including Girl’s Day for Linda’s Birthday
• Multiple visits with Cousin Lee-Lee & Cherie outside Atlanta
• Lunch with Gail’s friend Diana-P outside Atlanta
• Dinner with Mark’s friend Mark-S outside Atlanta
• Day at Clayton & Tracy’s farm/vineyard outside Charlottesville

Touring, with/without some of the friends & family above included:

• Exploring a number of cities/towns: Savannah, Hilton Head, Bradenton, St. Augustine
• Visits to Museums, Parks, etc.:
  • Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum, Savannah
  • Georgia State Railroad Museum, Savannah (Mark, Gail rested her ankle)
  • Cockspur Lighthouse @ Fort Pulaski
  • Historic Confederate Fort McAllister
  • Snook Haven Boat Tour near Sarasota
  • Selby Gardens, Sarasota (Gail with Linda)
  • South Florida Museum, Bradenton
  • St. Augustine Alligator Farm Zoological Park
  • Philpott Dam, Virginia
  • North Anna Nuclear Info Center, Virginia
• Hiking in 4 States, mostly in the State Parks in which we camped. “Should have” been more, but Gail twisted her ankle rather badly on our very first hike at Santee
• Attending 3 Grapefruit League Spring Training Games:

  • Orioles @ Pirates
  • Red Sox @ Pirates

Visited 6 National Park Sites 5 new/1 Revisit, 4 Civil War Sites, 3 States:

• Two of the Colonial Florida Parks:
  • Fort Matanzas National Monument (#105), Florida
  • De Soto National Memorial (#106), Florida
• Fredericksburg/Spotsylvania National Military Park (#29-Revisited), Virginia
